Venice and Istanbul

Contribution to Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture

INTRODUCTION

This activity, planned to contribute to the "Istanbul - European Capital of Culture - 2010" Project, strives to show the close ties between Europe and Turkey, through relations between Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire, revealing Venice's role as a bridge between the Islamic and Christian worlds, and showing the similarities between these cultures despite the religious, political and social differences among them. To this end a series of colloquia, conferences and educational programmes will be held with an accompanying exhibition.

COLLOQUIA

The colloquia will be held in March 2010 and will target Turkish and international scholars, museum experts and students of history and art. 15 speakers from Paris, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Berlin and London will adress a wide audience. The colloquia will provide a platform for professionals of the field, to exchange ideas and research on the relations between the East and the West, the historical context of these connections and their effects on current relations in a multicultural dialogue. The papers will be published to provide a source of information for future studies.

CONFERENCES

The conferences will be held twice a week for two months in 2010, during which 15 lecturers will address visitors, scholars, students and experts. These conferences will provide the opportunity for all visitors as well as experts and professionals in the related fields to learn more about the content as well as the context of the exhibition. The speeches will also be published to provide a source of information for future studies.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Educational programmes and workshops for school children between the ages of 5 and 17 will take place 6 days a week, twice a day, during the entire duration of the exhibition in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. These workshops will be essential in drawing a younger audience to the museum and establishing a link between the younger visitors and culturally more complex issues. A special book addressing children will be another original output of the activity. Adult education programmes that include discussions among university students in related fields will target all visitors of the Sakip Sabanci Museum. These programs will allow university students to feel connected with the exhibition and improve their knowledge in the field while expanding the visitors' historical knowledge and intercultural awareness.

EXHIBITION

An exhibition of Venetian and Ottoman objects and works of art will be exhibited as the center-piece of the activity. The exhibition will highlight the close links between these two cultures in spite of their differences in religious, political, social and cultural origins.
